Is Ruby on Rails dead? Some real numbers

I’ve been hearing “Ruby on Rails is dead!” during the last several years.

How many RoR jobs are there? Let’s find out the facts

I took a look at a few popular job websites, and here’s what I saw:

1,352 startups hiring Ruby on Rails developers/engineers on AngelList:

Let’s take a quick look at some major cities. 165 jobs in New York:

RoR jobs in Berlin:

But how about remote jobs?

Done with AngelList. How about freelance jobs on Upwork?

That should be enough to pick one.

But what about salaries? To get the average numbers, I looked at Indeed:

Salaries at other locations or remote positions may be lower than in the US, but this number still gives us a good overall picture.

Conclusion

Ruby on Rails is one of the most popular (and well paid) web frameworks. It’s about as demanded as Django (as Python have been raising again recently), and on average more demanded than PHP frameworks like Laravel.

In any case, the claim “RoR is dead” is clearly not correct. Lots of startups are being developed on Ruby on Rails in 2019.
